A bouquet for you, virtually speaking

Hello dear readers
As the lovely month of may winds down, i humbly offer a bouquet of a verbal nature for you to enjoy: words crafted by our most generous benefactor, Frank Bette himself, to entice and inspire you.

"Flame of Spring"

In steady merriment
a continuous flow
of sprightly
notes and phrases.
Gliding from
white patches flash
on wings and tail
announcing a new
flame of spring.

From Frank's book "Uplight the Quiet", published by Major Bookings, Alameda, Ca.1997

Please do submit, via email only please, your own works of poetry or prose, to be shared via this literary blog for all of us to enjoy, if you are so inclined.

Until next time dear readers

Oh Me! Oh My! A Word Buzz!

I've been woefully sad (only in a literary sense) since NaNoWriMo ended.... but lo-and-behold, in my inbox today, a note from Chris Baty about another Monthly Writing contest.

Script Frenzy

The challenge: Write a 100-page movie, play, graphic novel, or series of TV scripts in a month.

I'm for it? Are you? I think Xtina and I will need to discuss the possibility of write-ins again :)

Happy Feb! : An Article on Self Publishing

I know a lot of us interested in the written word and even some of us more inclined to the visual arts, have toyed with the idea of publishing our own book.

In November both Xtina and I attended the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco. This is an awesome and explosive event to go to and I recommend it to everyone I meet. At the Expo there are rows upon rows of inspiring artists and small publishing houses.

Anyways what made me think of this? I was organizing my "swag" (re: free stuff) and business cards from all the networking I did at the event and I was reminded of 2 small publishers that caught my eye.

Volta Press - www.voltapress.com - info@voltapress.com
Borogove - www.borogove.org/publishing - russell@borogove.org

For those really considering on taking the plunge I would contact these two companies. Also another interesting resource I pulled up yesterday as I went on my publishing tangent.

I hope these resources find you well. It's 2009 and We Can Accomplish Anything!

Farewell Janus! Hello Fire!

Fairest Readers
Alas! Time is ticking and tocking at an enormiferous rate....here we are in the last throes of January, the double faced month, (record cold? record heat a few days later) and heading into an early spring as usual here in the bay...fruit trees are starting to blossom, tulip trees in white and fushcia bloom, it heralds a coming of life after an instantaneous showing of winter. Did we even have one? Anyhoooooooo, in the literary world at FBCA, we of course have our monthly FREE ONGOING programs, for all to enjoy.
The 2nd Saturday Prose and Poetry hosted by Jeanne Lupton, with the open mic to follow
Storytelling Thursdays with Cathy Dana, (we don't like to call them 'fibbers' let's just say 'tall-tale tellers')
Free Write hosted by Patricia Edith on the final Sunday of the month.
Check out the FBCA for more details, such as times, exact dates for February, etc.

Also, is anyone writing anything right now? I have yet to have any poetry submissions. HMMMM. I know there are poets out there...please take a deep breath and send in those poems! We are in such need as a culture, for poetry and beauty, think of it as your national duty to SUBMIT...>< okay, a little extreme but you get my point.

Remember 2nd Saturday Poetry and Prose with Jeanne, bring out your stuff to share, and give Frank a tuppence or two or four
I leave you with one of my favorites, Pablo Neruda

"Poetry"
And it was at that age...poetry arrived
in search of me. I don't know, I don't know where
it came from, from winter or a river.
I don't know how or when,
no, they were not voices, they were not
words, not silence,
but from a street it called me,
from the branches of the night,
abruptly from others,
among raging fires
or returning alone,
there it was, without a face,
and it touched me.

What has touched you, dearest readers?

"That's Art!" Blog and newsletter

Hello hello everyone!

This is my first post on the (B) Literati blog. Jordan after 5 months of wonderful articles has decided due to the nature of his busy schedule to step down as Journalist and Editor of "That's Art!"; I don't want this to die, I'd really like to keep this going.

If you are interested in the position. Please contact Me, Xtina or Debra.

Have a wonderful day everyone,
Lyssette

happy happy 2009! here's to new beginnings!

fairest readers,
here is to a new year, new beginnings, and hopefully, a year where we all are able to stop and experience the beauty of words and the magic they bring to our lives.

in this, the darkest time of the year, let poetry light our lives and warm our hearts as we make a fresh start to be and foster creativity in our lives and our community.

in this spirit, please do come by FBCA on the Second Saturday of the month: January 10, 2009, from 7pm-9pm, where hostess Jeany Lupton has an amazing line up of featured local poets Peter E. Sandholdt and Dick Holmes.
Bring a dollar or two, (or five or ten, for that matter!) to put in the FB donation pot to keep the good stuff coming.

until we meet again, fair readers

On Novel writing, guilty pleasures and life in general

Fairest readers
please forgive my apparent inattention to the blog, my thoughts and time have been turned towards the goal of 50,000 words by December 1, 2008, as i have pledged in my NaNoWriMo participation. So far i have accumulated 19,500 words, a little short of the halfway goal set, but i am not worried. Experience tells me that the best thing to do is continue writing everyday no matter what may come. And it has come, injuries, injuries and more injuries: another fall (maybe i should wear a little bungee cord wherever i go?) and a rock in the eye have diminished my computer time significantly. So, i am resting a little bit and thinking about the upcoming TWILIGHT movie, which is admittedly a very guilty pleasure, along the lines of watching too much x-files and/or vampire pulp fiction, (which is brillant btw!) if you haven't heard all the hype about the twilight series, they are a set of books written for young adults (think of the HP crossover trend), but which are highly enjoyable, well-written, and easy enough to get through in a day or two. Must be off now, answers soon to come concerning the six degree of separation challenge!
until the next time fair readers
